Cotton Cake Filter Press

Description

The cotton cake filter press is a special plate and frame filter press designed for fine purification and clarification of liquids. It uses a regenerable cotton-fiber filter cake as the filtration medium, providing depth filtration for the removal of fine mechanical impurities, suspended particles and trace contaminants from process liquids.

Unlike a conventional filter press that mainly relies on filter cloth for solid-liquid separation, the cotton cake filter press uses a fibrous filtration layer to provide finer liquid clarification. The liquid passes through the cotton-fiber cake under pressure, while impurities are retained within and on the surface of the filtration layer, producing a cleaner and clearer filtrate.

The equipment adopts a circular plate-and-frame structure. Compared with a conventional square plate-and-frame configuration, the circular design provides uniform pressure distribution and stable mechanical performance. Filter plates and frames can be manufactured from aluminum alloy or reinforced polypropylene according to the characteristics of the liquid and process requirements.

How Cotton Cake Filtration Works

Before operation, the cotton-fiber filtration medium is installed between the plates and frames to form a fibrous filter layer. After the filter assembly is closed, the liquid to be filtered is pumped into the filtration chambers under pressure.

As the liquid passes through the cotton cake, fine suspended particles, mechanical impurities and other contaminants are retained by the fibrous structure. The purified liquid then passes through the internal flow channels and is discharged from the filter press.

The cotton filtration layer can be replaced or regenerated according to its condition and the requirements of the filtration process. This makes the system suitable for repeated batch filtration where liquid clarity is more important than processing a slurry with a high solids concentration.

Why Use a Cotton-Fiber Filter Cake

The three-dimensional fibrous structure of the cotton cake provides a deeper filtration path than a simple surface filter. Fine impurities can be captured throughout the filtration layer rather than only on its surface, making the equipment suitable for polishing and clarification applications where small amounts of fine contaminants must be removed.

The filtration effect depends on the condition and thickness of the cotton-fiber layer, liquid viscosity, operating pressure, contaminant concentration and required filtrate quality. The filtration medium should therefore be selected and prepared according to the actual process conditions.

The cotton cake filter press can be used for purification and fine clarification of liquids in food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical production, chemical processing, metallurgy and other industries. It is particularly suitable for processes where the liquid contains relatively low levels of fine suspended impurities and a clear filtrate is required.
